The 17th Annual Meeting of the European Law Research Branch of the Chinese European Society was held in Guangxi University

On 25 May 2024, the 17th Annual Meeting of the European Law Research Sub-Committee of the Chinese European Society (CELRS) and the Seminar on ‘Extraterritorial Effect of EU Law and Rule of Law Construction in Foreign Countries’ were held at the Law School of Guangxi University. More than twenty participants from the Institute of European Studies of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, Wuhan University, Guangxi University, Beijing Institute of Technology, Tongji University, Nanjing University, Shandong University, Central South University, Fudan University, University of International Business and Economics, China University of Political Science and Law, East China University of Political Science and Law, Shanghai University of International Business and Economics, Southwestern University of Political Science and Law, Central South University of Economics and Law, Nankai University, Shanghai Institutes for International Studies, Shanghai Academy of Political Science and Law and so on, attended the seminar, The meeting was attended by experts and scholars from more than twenty colleges and universities, publishing organisations and law firms, including China Social Science Press. According to the approval of the Chinese Society of Europe, the European Law Research Branch completed the change of the Council during the annual meeting and produced the fourth Council.

The opening ceremony of this annual meeting was presided over by Prof Xu Guangyao, Dean of Law School of Guangxi University, and Xia Guo'en, Vice President of Guangxi University, made a speech on behalf of the organiser. Mr Cheng Weidong, President of the European Law Research Branch of the Chinese Society of Europe and Researcher of the Institute of European Studies of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, delivered a speech on behalf of the Research Branch, stating that the expansion of the extraterritorial effect of the EU law will have a significant impact on the international community, international relations and the development of international law, and that this session of the Conference is of great significance to carry out a discussion of the extraterritorial effect of the EU law in terms of the theory, the rules, as well as the impacts. It will also provide important academic support and reference value for the development of Sino-European relations and the construction of China's foreign-related rule of law.

With the theme of ‘Extraterritorial Effect of EU Law and Foreign-related Rule of Law Construction’, the conference focused on the new features and trends of the current EU law, and discussed such cutting-edge topics as the European supply chain law, the transformation of the EU economic and trade rules related to China, the digital regulation and AI legislation, the change of the EU competition law, and the development of the European private law, etc. In the morning, six young and middle-aged scholars discussed the theme of the conference, which is the most important topic of the conference. In the morning, six young and middle-aged scholars delivered speeches on the theme, and in the afternoon, three sessions were held to discuss the aforementioned broad topics.
