GXU Law school Hosts Overseas Master Lecture of Guangxi University and Lecture on China-ASEAN Arbitration and Dispute Settlement

On 24th May 2024, the Overseas Master Lecture Hall of Guangxi University and the Lecture on ‘China-ASEAN Arbitration and Dispute Resolution’, which was hosted by Guangxi University School of Law and co-organised by Nanning Arbitration Commission and Dai Weiyu Law Firm, was held in Junwu Hall. Mary Lim Thiam Suan, Judge of the Federal Supreme Court of Malaysia, Sundra Rajoo, Chairman of Asian Institute of Multi-disciplinary Dispute Resolution (AIADR), and Choong Yeow Choy, Academician of the Academy of Sciences of Malaysia, were invited to give lectures on the theme, and Mr Tian Lihui, Vice-President of Guangxi University, and representatives of the faculty and students of the Faculty of Law, and representatives of legal practitioners from Nanning Arbitration Commission were invited to give lectures on the theme. Tian Lihui, Vice President of the University, representatives of the faculty and students of the Faculty of Law, and legal practitioners from the Nanning Municipal Arbitration Commission (NMA), totalled 300 participants. Professor Xu Guangyao, Dean of the Faculty of Law, presided over the lecture.

Three Malaysian legal experts introduced the development of dispute arbitration procedures in ASEAN countries with the topics of ‘China-ASEAN Commercial Arbitration Collaboration’, ‘International Arbitration in ASEAN Countries’ and ‘Enforcement of Commercial Arbitral Awards in ASEAN Countries’ respectively. The lecture introduced the development history and current situation of dispute arbitration procedures in ASEAN countries, and put forward thoughts and prospects on how to improve the diversified dispute resolution mechanism and enhance the level of ASEAN-China legal cooperation.

On the scene of the lecture, the ‘Signing Ceremony of Memorandum of Cooperation between Guangxi University and Asian Institute of Pluralistic Dispute Resolution (AIADR)’ and the ‘Ceremony of Appointment Ceremony of Visiting Professors of Guangxi University’ were also held, in which the Vice-President, Mr Tian Lihui, Mr Justice Thiam Suan, Mr Justice Mary Lim, and Mr Justice Thiam Suan were invited to attend. Under the joint witness of Vice President Tian Lihui, Justice Mary Lim Thiam Suan and leaders of our university Yu Yunyu and Xu Guangyao, Director of International Exchange and Cooperation Department of our university Guan Rongzhen and Chairman of Asian Institute of Multi-disciplinary Dispute Resolution (AIADR) Sundra Rajoo signed the Memorandum of Co-operation on behalf of both parties, and both parties will carry out a full range of co-operation in the areas of co-operation in the research of international arbitration, talent cultivation and curriculum construction. The two sides will carry out all-round co-operation in international arbitration research, talent training and curriculum construction. Focusing on the needs of international arbitration talent cultivation of the university, the university decided to employ four overseas experts, including Lin Tianjian, Sundra Rajoo, Zhong Youcai and Chen Xiuting, as visiting professors of Guangxi University, and Tian Lihui issued letters of appointment to them on behalf of the university.

Asian Institute of Multi-disputes Resolution (AIADR) is a global multi-disputes resolution research institution covering Asia and other parts of the world, with a total of more than 700 expert members from all over the world, and it is the most influential and authoritative research and training institution on dispute resolution in Asia, with internationally accredited training courses in the field of arbitration and a team of experts. This Overseas Master Lecture Hall Activity focuses on our university's cooperation in the field of international arbitration towards ASEAN, and the signing of the Memorandum of Cooperation will boost the in-depth development of the cultivation of foreign-related rule of law talents in our university, and lay a good foundation for actively exploring the opening of international arbitration courses, expanding teaching resources, and implementing overseas internship programmes.

This event also provides an opportunity for practitioners engaged in foreign-related legal services in Guangxi to expand their horizons and exchange experiences. Liu Dongdong and Yan Hui, Deputy Secretary General of Nanning Arbitration Commission Secretariat, Dong Dudu and Chen Gang, leaders of the institute, and some teachers from the teaching and research departments of international law, economic law and civil and commercial law participated in the lectures, and representatives of the teachers and students of the institute carried out extensive interactive exchanges with arbitrators, notaries public, lawyers, alumni, etc., present at the seminar.
